Mystery Pictures!

Last night I checked my email, and I recieved two pictures sent from a verizon phone. This was very confusing to me, as there was no context, follow up email, or phone call. I have a hunch my grandmother sent then to me to answer a question I posed in an earlier post. Maybe my mom? This must be the daisy churn!

What is a daisy churn?
"Eating her curds and whey..."
This photo is of the Daisy Churn that belongs to Mary Cat's grandmother. When I was a teenager, we used it to make butter from the fresh milk we got from our neighbor's dairy cows.
As you see, it is a squarish jar with a a crank mechanism and paddles.
Cream floats to the top of unhomogenized milk and is skimmed off if you want to make butter. Many readers who never had raw milk to work with may have had a teacher who had a lesson on making butter by shaking cream in a small jar until until it separated the cream from the whey so it could make butter. You must work all of the liquid out of the butter before you form it into a solid cohesive and pliable mound. Look for butter molds at flea markets and antique shops or your grandmother's pantry!
